Gesner Abelard, born February 22, 1922 in Port-au-Prince, was educated in technical school where he also studied drawing and painting. He also developed an interest in sculpture which he studied under noted sculptor Huberman Charles. Abelard is variously said to have been a mechanic, a detective, even a "secret agent" for President Elie Lescot before he joined the Centre d'Art in the mid 1940s at the invitation of Dewitt Peters. He later moved to Carrefour, on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince.
His work is included in the permanent collections of the Musee d'Art Haitien du College St. Pierre in Port-au-Prince, the Figge Art Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Waterloo Center for the Arts.
